2011 Summer Internship


Are you a fan of the written word?  An avid reader?  Love spending an afternoon in a bookstore? Admire the physical beauty of books?  Collect obscure Southern literature?  More importantly, are you wondering how you’re going to gain meaningful employment with a degree in English or some other field of the humanities? Worry no more!  Maple Street Book Shops are accepting applications for an eight-week general internship position for the summer of 2011. As the oldest independent bookstore in New Orleans, Maple Street is able to offer interns an in-depth, hands-on experience in the transforming book industry. Not only does Maple Street offer their customers the newest releases in traditional print form, there is also a used and rare shop, and electronic books will soon be available.

Position Description:  The intern position is a full-time, eight week, unpaid position, under the supervision of the manager, Gladin Scott, and the owner, Donna Allen.  The internship begins on June 6, 2011 and ends on July 30, 2011.  On a daily basis, the intern will work directly with Matt Carney and/or Veronica Brooks-Sigler.  The primary assignment will be online cataloging/inventory of used and rare volumes.  Secondary functions include customer service, working both in house and off site events (ALA Convention), pricing, etc.  Maple Street is willing to work with your advisor to allow the position to count as course credit(s).

Applicant Requirements:

    1.  Must have strong interest in publishing/book industry.
    2.  Must have a 3.0 overall GPA.
    3.  Must have completed first two years of college.
    4.  Must be reliable and responsible.
    5.  Must be friendly/possess good interpersonal skills.
    6.  Must be detail oriented.
    7.  Must be self-motivated/possess the ability to work independently.
    8.  Must be able to work as part of a team when needed.
    9.  Must possess basic computer skills.
    10.Must be flexible with tasks.
